VISITING THE SHIP YARD –
ON THE TRACK OF “SOLIDARITY”
We would like you to learn about one of the most important subjects written on the pages of Gdansk’s recent history, and take you to the premises of the historical Shipyard of Gdansk.
On the way there you will see the monument commemorating the victims of December 1970 – three 42metre tall crosses standing in an irregular triangular shape. The crosses, as a symbol of suffering, represent the first three shipyard workers to fall to the Police and People’s Army of Poland. The anchor is a symbol of hope with reference to 1956, 1970 and 1976.
Then we will enter into the heart of the shipyard in Gdansk. The shipyard once was one of the greatest working places in our region, and also where Lech Walesa worked. Here, “Solidarity” the social movement was founded. Walesa’s leap over the shipyard’s fence became a symbol of certain changes in Poland. It is here, in the BHP Hall that the historical August Treaty between the strikers and the authorities was signed, which became the beginning of the fall of communism in the Central/Eastern Europe.
Today, the shipyard is a large area with huge cranes seen from afar, production halls and docks in addition to artistic installations. The Gdansk Shipyard also has become a post-industrial place where monumental concerts and artistic spectacles are organized, for example the concerts of Rod Stewart, David Gilmour, Jean Michel Jarre and Ennio Morricone with over 100 people symphony orchestra.
Currently a brand new European Solidarity Centre is being built there, next to the historical gate, which will eventually be a huge, modern museum about those events.

a stylish shipyard cafeteria (extra charge). We can also arrange
a meeting with a shipyard worker who will tell you interesting inside-facts about it.

NOTE:
The minimum number of people, for a trip to happen is 30 person. Two weeks before the planned trip organizer can cancel the trip (when there will be an adequate number of volunteers) cost will be send back.
